Gritty and Compelling Ensemble Drama That Works
This intense drama, now in its 15th season and still going strong, set the stage for ensemble drama, in which the cast plays a secondary role to the story. Law & Order, as originally conceived, drew the viewer into the process by which American law enforcement and litigation works, or doesn't, depending on the viewer's opinion. The first half-hour is devoted to the investigation of a crime, the second to its prosecution. Cases are made or lost by evidence, lack thereof, a technicality, or even judicial whim. Dick Wolf made it clear from day one that the cast was expendable; no prima donnas here. The first cast was all male, with one African-American. Wolf apparently caved to fan pressure for a more politically-correct spectrum, but it really didn't matter so long as the actors could carry the story forward. His best casting choice was Jerry Orbach, his worst Elisabeth Rohm, but with or without these people, the drama continues. In recent years, L&O has lost some of the grittiness that made it so compelling, and I do miss actors such as Steven Hill, Michael Moriarty, Chris Noth, Jill Hennessy and now Orbach, but the show is still far superior to the majority of what passes for prime-time programming. It only suffers in the rare episodes when a politically-correct message is pushed into the story, i.e., whenever it deviates from its original format of presenting how the criminal justice system works. Ignore the spinoffs; the original Law & Order is still the best.
To the supreme court of Law&Orderland: the reviews here are admissible evidence. Loyal fans are boycotting HDancy !
The people behind a great show give their fans what they want. Remember Friends? So strange for L&O's producers to keep ignoring so many reviews that fans are boycotting Dancy. Do they not want the same people watching anymore?
It was one of the greatest shows ever. But h. Dancy has ruined it as the worst ADA it's ever had. The character's personality is weak, but the performance is also weak. His delivery is very dramatic, sure, but he does not believe in it any more than i do. His eyes are always blank even when his voice and gestures get excited. A sad fraction of McCoy as prosecutor in all aspects, McCoy's passion and integrity make you really root for him to win. It is why people keep coming back for 20 years.
Dancy is so hard to watch, made me stop watching after 20 years. The show should replace dancy asap. Give the show back its backbone. They should have brought back Angie Harmon instead.
And find another Briscoe please ! These smug detectives now dont even come close. No appeal, pun intended.
We need order restored to law and order. The people rest.
The first 20 seasons - 8 / 10.
Season 21 to 24 -- 2 / 10.

Season 21
I was really looking forward to this original Law & Order returning. But, I'm beyond disappointed. The characters are just not likable, and the writing is awful. The new DA is a self absorbed person who always thinks he'd right, and Sam Waterson's character doesn't really challenge him, and just gives in. Jeff Donovan's character is the worst. Jeff was terrific in Burn Notice. In this, he comes off as an nasty cop with a really bad attitude, and a bigot to boot. Time to fire the writing staff and do some recasting.
Watch it for Briscoe and McCoy!
To be honest, I didn't become a real fan of the series until Jerry Orbach (Detective Briscoe)and Sam Waterston(EADA McCoy)came into the picture. This is when the series starts to pick up steam. Watching the show, you can't help but laugh at Briscoe's remarks or feel the passion of McCoy. Both of these men want justice, and will do everything within limits to bring the wrongdoers to justice. What I really like about the show is the wonderful twists and turns that they throw to the audience, as well as the "ripped from the headlines" episodes. Even though you have 2 more in the "Law And Order" franchise, the original is STILL the best!
Just okay but new writers can spice it up
The writing has been super lazy. Ripped from the headlines doesn't mean read the headlines as dialogue! Not many twists and turns or originality
You may not have noticed but there are almost a full 5-6 minutes cut from the original programs. That's actually a lot. That goes to advertising now. I miss a 25 minute police story prior to the courtroom part and the crossover with both sides of the show. If your wondering what's so different - that's a big issue.
I guess it's harder to watch regular TV now with streaming available but the continuous breaks are getting worse.
