To make the film look more realistic Rauni Mollberg wanted it be shot entirely with a hand-held camera. That was a style familiar from Mollberg's previous films.

Despite that Heikki Valpola did compose music for the film, the released film has no music score.

In the 70s Matti Kassila planned to make a new film-version of 'Tuntematon sotilas', which would have been produced by Jörn Donner. But those plans were aborted due to financial difficulties. When Kassila saw Mollberg's version of the film in the 80s he phoned Edvin Laine (Director of the first version) and told him: "Yours is still the number one."

With its 590 271 spectators The Unknown Soldier (1985) was the fourth highest grossing movie in Finland in the 80s. It was beaten by Uuno Turhapuro armeijan leivissä (1984), The Winter War (1989) and Uuno Epsanjassa (1985).
