The film is loosely based on the life of Polish actress Elzbieta Czyzewska, who had trouble establishing herself as an actress in New York after fleeing her homeland. She made a comeback after the film's release, winning an Obie Award for her performance in the play "Crowbar," and appearing in movies like Running on Empty (1988) and Music Box (1989).
The film was Oscar nominated for one Academy Award in 1988 for Sally Kirkland in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role with the gong being won in the end by Cher for 'Moonstruck' (1987).
Actress Paulina Porizkova married Ric Ocasek of 'The Cars'. His band-mate Greg Hawkes composed the music score for this film.
