Presumably he wants money so he doesn't have to steal and attract the attention of the police, being shot might not kill it but will hurt it.
It is established in the sequal that the real Thomas Beck died in the hospital following the shootout. Seeing the pain this caused his family the alien possessing the body of Lloyd Gallagher takes over his body and lives out his life as Thomas Beck, his wife and daughter accepting him as a replacement.
