Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter in Raising Arizona (1987)

FAQ

Raising Arizona

FAQ

The "HI" is a set of initials, H.I. Late in the film, when HI is writing Ed the letter, he signs it "Your loving Herbert" so his name, at least from what we can gather here, is Herbert I. McDunnough. We never find out what the I stands for.

Ed's first name is, "Edwina" as she says early in the film when questioned by HI while she takes his mug shot. Ed's maiden name is Hucket, as visible on her police uniform name tag.

H.I. has a dream looking into the future, seeing what became of Gale, Evelle, Glenn, and even what the future possibly held for he and Ed.

Raising Arizona is based on a screenplay written by American co-directors and brothers Ethan and Joel Coen.

It's been clocked at 11 minutes and 13 seconds into the film.

This could have been done to suggest that Smalls is H.I.'s doppelganger. It's also possible that it's a quirky coincidence, shown to offset the tension of the scene and remind the audience that they're watching a comedy.

The tattoo itself is a variation on the emblem of the Thrush Company, which produces and sells racing auto parts.

No. HI and Leonard were both given away at birth. I believe they are twins and parent had them both tattooed. Then when adopted/ stolen ( hence different last names) they both fell into a life of crime as adults, but HI displayed a less severe nature than Leonard. ( Leonard carries baby boots and another tattoo that reads "momma didn't love me". ) He also said he fetched 30K on the black market as a baby in 1954. I believe Hi said "I'm sorry" to Leonard because upon seeing the woody woodpecker tattoo HI realized it was his twin brother. I would love to ask the Coen brothers if this is their intention.

Gate (John Goodman). It was when he was trying to convince him that outlaw life was more than just robbing grocery stores and he needed to come with them to go after a big bank, a job that would -- if successful -- net them a much larger amount of money than a convenience store.

Nathan Arizona Huffhines, Sr., operates Unpainted Arizona, a furniture store.
