This movie makes a decent thriller out of a novel that was one of the weakest in the Martin Beck series. The plot has been considerably tightened, the premise made more plausible, the ending much more coherent, and the number of characters condensed, all of them serious improvements.
The casting is impeccable and near perfection. Gösta Ekman was an expert actor indeed, Rolf Lassgård and Kjell Bergqvist bring excellent life to the Gunvald Larsson and Lennart Kollberg respectively, and Niklas Hjulström is great as the young streber. No spoilers here, but let's just say that the villains are also played with equal expertise.
In short, it's a good flick well worth a watch, and it hasn't really aged all that much either.
