one of my top 10 favorites!

This movie is definitely on the list of my top 10 favorites. The voices for the animals are wonderful. Sally Field and Michael J. Fox are both brilliant as the sassy feline and the young inexperienced pooch, but the real standout is Don Ameche as the old, faithful golden retriever. This movie is a great family movie because it can be appreciated and loved by children as well as adults. Humorous and suspenseful, and guaranteed to make every animal lover cry! (happy tears!)

    I loved it!

What a fun movie! I enjoyed the locales, scenery, and just had a ball when I saw it several years ago in the theater. Now my family owns the video. Chance, Sassy, and Shadow are adorable animals and are voiced perfectly by Michael J. Fox, Sally Field and the beloved late actor Don Ameche. I also loved the family and felt they were played very realistically. I especially loved Robert Hays as the gentle stepfather who wants to do right by his new stepkids. If you're looking for good, clean, solid and funny family entertainment, you can't go wrong with Homeward Bound.

    Tearjerker from beginning to end

If you are a dog (or cat) lover, this movie is for you. It made me laugh, smile and even cry. I would watch it with your furry companion, and believe me you would want to watch it with them till the end

Never get tired of this gem

I absolutely love Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey always delightful experience! So much cuteness packed into a dangerous and wonderful exploration so much greatness for an animal film! I even get goosebumps at some of it. The cast is perfect for it too.

This movie makes me cry every. single. time.

This movie gets me every single time. I've seen Homeward Bound many, many times, and I always get teary-eyed at the end. This is one of those rare talking pet movies where the voice actors and the on-screen animals are both worthy of praise. Plus, you can tell some actual care went into the writing and the filmmaking. The humor is clever, the story has heart, and this film is definitely one I recommend.

    • Trivia
When Shadow falls into a pit and injures his leg, the dog never actually fell into the pit. When he stepped on the boards, they broke, but there was a platform immediately below. Then a fake dog was dropped into the pit and these scenes were edited together. Shadow tries to get out but the pit is large and deep and muddy and he keeps slipping back into the pit because he cannot get a good grip. To accomplish this scene, a special pit was dug which was about three to four feet deep. For the sliding back and forth, one trainer was at the top of the pit calling the dog. Another trainer was at the bottom telling the dog to stay. When he did, he would naturally start sliding downward. The dog could actually walk out on his own at any time and did so several times during the filming. When Shadow does appear at the end of the film to be reunited with Peter, Shadow runs with a limp. This was accomplished by putting part of a round wooden bead between the dog's toes. The bead did not hurt him in any way, but gave him a peculiar sensation, causing him to walk with a limp.

The marks on Chance's face from getting hit by the porcupine change in nearly every shot, and at one point disappear all together, but are back in the next shot.
    • Quotes

Shadow: [after Sassy is lost in the river] I shouldn't have made her come.

Chance: It's not your fault, she wanted to come.

Shadow: But it's my responsibility. I had a responsibility to Sassy - to love her and protect her - the same as I have to you... and to Peter. And the same as you have to Jamie.

Chance: But we didn't ask for this job.

Shadow: We didn't have to. It's built in. Has been ever since the dawn of time... when a few wild dogs took it upon themselves to watch over man, to bark when he's in danger, to run and play with him when he's happy, to nuzzle him when he's lonely. That's why they call us man's best friend.

Chance: [narrating] Looking at him that night, he seemed so wise... and ancient, like the first dog who ever walked the earth. I just hope that one day, I can be like him.

    • Alternate versions
Some additional scenes not included on the video release but aired on TV include:
      • A scene where Peter and Jamie wash off Chance after he eats the wedding cake but before he tricks Sassy on the seesaw.
      • A scene in which Kate takes the animals for a ride in the truck.
      • A scene with the kids playing Nintendo when Bob realizes he's been invited to a welcome BBQ on the same day they were supposed to go to Kate's to visit Shadow, Chance, and Sassy.
      • An extended scene of Quentin rescuing Sassy and taking her back to his cabin.
      • The scene where Frank greets Kate upon her return home was extended to show Kate discovering the missing part of her note, calling an animal shelter, and speculating to Frank that the animals left to head home to Fresno before calling a park ranger.
      • A scene where Quentin is playing the saxophone during the evening and then Sassy tying up Quentin's goat when he left his cabin.
      • After seeing the Fresno skyline and before hitting a rail yard, the animals stop at a dumpster where Sassy tries to find food but comes up empty.
