Skylark is the second movie in a trilogy of movies based on a series of children's books by American author Patricia MacLachlan. The first movie, Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991) (1991) was adapted from a 1985 book of the same name. Skylark was adapted from MacLachlan's 1994 book of the same name. A third movie, Sarah, Plain & Tall: Winter's End (1999) is based on the third book in the series, Caleb's Story (2001). There are two more books in the series: More Perfect Than the Moon (2004) and Grandfather's Dance (2006). Skylark was adapted for the screen by MacLachlan and American screenwriter Carol Sobieski.
Yes. Sarah Witting (nèe Wheaton) is once again played by Glenn Close, and Christopher Walken plays her husband Jacob. Their two children, Anna and Caleb, are played respectively by Lexi Randall and Christopher Bell.
"Skylark" was a nickname that Sarah's father gave to her when she was a young girl because she was always on the go, running around, climbing trees, etc.
Two years, as evidenced when it is mentioned that it was two years ago that Sarah left Maine to move to Kansas as Jacob Witting's mail order "wife". That would place the story in the year 1910.

As Jacob is sitting in the house one evening, thunder can be heard. Suddenly, it begins to rain. Jacob goes outside and sits on the ground, letting the water wash over him and watching Caleb's waterglass begin to fill with rain. The next day, Jacob takes the train to Maine and joins Sarah, Anna, and Caleb as a surprise. As he and Sarah are walking along the ocean, Jacob tells Sarah that he loves her and that there are some things that just shouldn't be written in a letter. Sarah agrees and tells him that she wants their baby to be born on the prairie. When Jacob stops being stunned, he embraces Sarah. In the final scene, the Witting family returns to the farm in Kansas. As they are walking up to the porch, Sarah picks up a twig and writes her name in the dirt.
The actual house exteriors and interiors, barn(s) and scenes around the homestead are filmed at 4171 West 285th Street, Osage City, Kansas. The owners of the home actually purchased the homestead BECAUSE of this movie! They love showing guests around the property and allow them to take pictures. The place is about 90% the way it looked in the movie, except the original home owners had the movie crew change a few things back after they were done filming, and the windmill has fallen down. There is a new barn after the first one burned.
