Ben was shot by Harry Cooper but locked himself in the basement. The next morning, after Barbara had fled the house and found the rednecks, she returned to the house to find that Ben had bled to death, becoming a zombie. The rednecks used a machine gun to shoot him in the head.

Since it has been established that no matter how you die, unless it's via head trauma, you will return as a zombie, so it is obvious that Ben initially died from bleeding to death from the gunshot wound.

The year 1990 brought Tom Savini's remake of the groundbreaking zombie-classic "Night of the Living Dead" to the big screen. Until today, the remake has only been released in this theatrical version, be it on VHS or DVD. However, a comparison with the workprint reveals, that this theatrical cut not only lacks some plot scenes, but also features numerous violence-elicited cuts, that probably were necessary for the R rating.
