Tim Piggot-Smith was Chief Constable John Stafford in series 1, 2 and the first 2 episodes of series 3. Martin Shaw's Alan Cade was assisting Stafford in the initial episodes of series 3 before being awarded the Chief's job following Stafford's promotion to a job with Europol.
