Series creator John Kricfalusi was adamant about Stimpy not having a thick dopey sounding voice commonly seen in dim-witted cartoon sidekicks, having already chosen Billy West to provide Stimpy's voice, West tested a variety of voices until John Kricfalusi finally settled on a Larry Fine type voice.
John Kricfalusi (and, by extension, his company Spumco) was fired from the series in 1992 due to his inability to produce episodes on schedule. Games Animation took over the production, and Billy West inherited the role of Ren.
