Alan Cummings stars as Bernard Bottle, an successful art dealer, whom is fired by his greedy and corrupt boss Charles Pinkworth (Rowan Atkinson) for deciding to pay back the owners of a painting, which he paid for $2500.00. To make things a lot worse, Bernard's girlfriend has ran off with his best friend and Bernard looses everything. But, Bernard discovers a magic lamp in his apartment, which his girlfriend once gave him as a Christmas gift and rubs it, only to free Josepheus (Lenny Henry) a genie, whom has been imprisoned within the magic lamp for 2000 years by a wizard, for the accident death of the wizard's daughter, during a knife throw performance and Bernard befriends Josepheus and Bernard introduces Josepheus to the modern world and Josepheus gets up to date with modern life and culture and Josepheus grants Berenard unlimited wishes and Josepheus agrees to help Bernard win the heart of a Santa shop employee. But, Pinkworth decides to implicate Bernard in the theft of the Mona Lisa and and breaks into Bernard's apartment with the police, preparing to entrap Bernard and arrest him for the crime and steal back the Mona Lisa, only to find, Bernard has the Mona Lisa at his apartment (Which the Genie granted for Bernard) and Bernard finds himself in trouble, when he kills one of the police officers at his apartment in self-defence, mistaking him for a burgular and is arrested and Josepheus is also arrested as Bernard's accomplice.
