Producer Larry A. Thompson planned to expand the movie into a three-part trilogy that delved further into the lives of Lucy and Desi, but the ratings weren't what the network hoped for, so plans for subsequent films were scrapped.
Lucie Arnaz was very much outraged by the portrayal of her parents in this movie, believing that its makers didn't really go into explaining the reasons behind the couple's tumultuous marriage. This prompted Arnaz and her husband Laurence Luckenbill to create the Emmy Award-winning, Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie (1993) in 1993, which gave a lot of insight into the Ball-Arnaz marriage.
John Wheeler (William Frawley) previously appeared in the film musical "Mame", in which the real Lucille Ball had the title role.
