Sylvia makes this clear that she's not interested in a platonic relationship with Richard, who feels sorry for Lilli. As a response, Richard angrily leaves her behind in the middle of the fish pond, in plain view of the landing party. As Richard returns to Lilli, Sylvia angrily assures him that he would never conform to civilized society. In her final scene, she was captured and taken back to the Tradewind (her father's ship) by two crew members, taken into custody for seduction.

When a toddler and his dead parents, Richard and Emmeline Lestrange, are rescued from a drifting rowboat at sea, Sarah Hargrave (Lisa Pelikan), a young widow with an infant daughter Lilli, agrees to care for the lad. When cholera sweeps the ship, Sarah and the children are set adrift in a rowboat for their own safety, and the three of them become marooned on the same island where little Richard grew up. When Sarah dies of pneumonia, Lilli (Milla Jovovich) and Richard (Brian Krause) grow into teenagers and must deal with their sexual maturity.

Return to the Blue Lagoon is the sequel to The Blue Lagoon (1980) (1980), which was based on the novel The Blue Lagoon (1908) by Irish author Henry De Vere Stacpoole. The movie sequel is supposedly based on Stacpoole's sequel novel The Garden of God (1923). It was adapted for the screen by American film-maker Leslie Stevens, but there is little similarity between the novel and the film (the film is more like a remake of The Blue Lagoon).

Richard, Em, and Little Paddy, stuck in their rowboat without oars and a shark circling around them, begin drifting away from the island. After drifting overnight, Paddy gets hungry and eats some of the never-wake-up berries he tossed on the boat. Believing that Paddy is going to die, Richard and Em divide up the remaining berries, ingest them, and kiss each other one last time. In the final scene, a schooner carrying Richard's father pulls up alongside the rowboat. "Are they dead?", Arthur asks the ship's captain, who climbed aboard the rowboat. "No sir," he replies, "They're asleep."

The movie is not clear about their ages, and neither are Richard and Lilli. Even if they were keeping track by counting the full moons, they would be wrong because they were counting a year as 12 full moons when there are actually 13 full moons in a year (the moon's cycle is 28 days long). The story begins in 1897, when Lilli was no more than a year old, and Richard was only two years old. They look to be about nine and ten years old when their mother dies. Lilli tells the captain of the Tradewind that their mother died six years ago, making them roughly 15 (Lilli) and 16 (Richard) in the movie, and the year would be 1912. (This is just an estimate and not canon.)

No reason was given in the movie because no one knew the toddler's name. Most viewers assume that, when Paddy was rescued, the only words he could say were "Mommy/Mama", "boat", and "Richard", so they called him Richard. In the novel, he was named "Dick-Em", a combination of the child's parents' names.

On the island of Taveuni, the third largest island in Fiji. Taveuni can be seen just to the right of the second largest island, Vanua Levu.

Extremely jealous, Lilli leaves Richard with Sylvia (Nana Coburn) and runs off but, when Sylvia makes this clear that she's not interested in a platonic relationship with Richard, he rebuffs her and returns to Lilli, only to find her being accosted by one of the crew members looking for the pearl she wears in her hair. A fight breaks out, and the sailor grazes Richard's arm with a bullet from his rifle. Even with the captain and other crewmates ordering him to stop, the sailor chases Richard through the tidepools, shooting at him. Richard dives into the lagoon, and the sailor follows. Ever vigilant, the shark follows after the sailor and pulls him under. When Lilli learns that the Tradewind is going to set sail at dawn, she informs Richard that she is going to remain on the island because she is pregnant and doesn't want her baby to be born in a civilization where there is evil, lying, and guns. Richard agrees, and the next morning, the Tradewind sets sail without Richard and Lilli. In the final scenes, set a year or two later, Richard and Lilli play in the lagoon with their baby daughter (Annabel Graham).
