According to Whitney Houston's long-time bodyguard David Roberts, Houston suffered a cocaine overdose during the film's production.
Forest Whitaker stated in an interview with Ebony Magazine that Robin Givens and Halle Berry were among the women who auditioned for the role of Robin. After casting Angela Bassett and Whitney Houston, he decided to go with relative unknowns for the other two roles, and the role of Robin was subsequently given to Lela Rochon. Rochon, Berry, and Givens had all previously acted in Boomerang (1992), and had each shared love scenes with star Eddie Murphy.
Angela Bassett would later make her directorial debut in Whitney (2015), the Lifetime original biography film about Whitney Houston.
Director Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett would work together again 23 years later in Black Panther (2018).
