Glen Berry and Scott Neal in Beautiful Thing (1996)

Trivia

Beautiful Thing

Edit
As of July 2013, the council estate where filming took place has been demolished as part of the Tavy Bridge regeneration project.
When Sandra recalls that Cass Elliot died by choking on a sandwich she is repeating an urban legend. "Mama" Cass actually died of heart failure. Reports immediately after her death (before the autopsy) apparently quoted her doctor as saying she probably died by choking on a sandwich. Despite the results of the autopsy, the sandwich story has stuck.
Sandra says that there are plenty of places that gay people can go without having to worry, that there is even an island in the Mediterranean called 'Lesbian.' She is misnaming the Greek island of Lesbos. The island's inhabitants are often referred to as Lesbians.
Screenwriter Jonathan Harvey states that when he started writing the play on which this film is based, it was set in his hometown of Liverpool. However, once he wrote Sandra's line that she had gone "robbing" when she was too poor to feed her son, he decided to change the setting to London to avoid being accused of stereotyping Liverpudlians.
Lead actors Scott Neal (Ste) and Glen Berry (Jamie) both appeared on the popular police TV series "The Bill" although not together. In the series Scott Neal's character, Luke Ashton, is also gay. Luke's gay kiss was the first gay kiss ever for the TV series.

Cameo

Jonathan Harvey: Screenwriter appears as the Wheelchair Queen in the scene in the Gloucester pub.
