Rather than seek studio financing, Spike Lee financed the film with monetary contributions from famous black men so as to reflect the spirit of the Million Man March. The contributors included (but were not limited to): Will Smith, Danny Glover, Wesley Snipes, Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., and Robert Guillaume.

This first film directed by Spike Lee in which Lee himself did not act or even appear.

Hill Harper played a 19-year-old. At the time of filming, Hill was actually 30.

Released into theaters on Wednesday, October 16th, 1996, which was the one year anniversary of the Million Man March.

Guy Margo, who played Khalid, the Muslim man with the bow tie who travels on the bus throughout the movie, had no lines due to financial constraints. Spike Lee thinks they could have squeezed something in, and considers it a big mistake to have left the character without dialogue.
