Hype! (1996)

Hype!

Edit
When journalist Jonathan Gold was supposed to interview Chris Cornell for the documentary, Cornell slipped out of the building while the camera crew was still setting up its lights, so that guitarist Kim Thayil and drummer Matt Cameron ended up being the only band members talking about Soundgarden in the film.
The documentary notably contains footage of Nirvana's debut live performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," recorded on April 17, 1991 at Seattle's OK Hotel.
A collector's edition Blu-Ray and DVD were released on September 29, 2017, featuring new audio commentary with director Doug Pray and producer Steven Helvey, bonus performances and outtakes, Peter Bagge's animated short "Hate", and new interviews with Mark Arm and Steve Neil Turner of Mudhoney, Kurt Bloch and Lulu Gargiulo of The Fastbacks, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, manager Susan Silver, producer Steve Fisk, photographer Charles Peterson, producer Jack Endino, bassist Leighton Beezer, graphic designer Art Chantry and Sub Pop Records CEO Megan Jasper. The interviews took place in Seattle in July 2017, and the recent death of Chris Cornell (who passed away in May 2017) was briefly discussed, as well as Kurt Cobain's death and the impact it had on the Seattle music scene.
Doug Pray's first feature film.
