Tim Burton was originally set to direct this after he completed filming Ed Wood (1994), but subsequently dropped out of the production of "Mary Reilly" out of anger towards Peter Guber for putting "Ed Wood", a passion project, into turnaround.
A majority of the props were real items from the Victorian era and belonged to several museums and galleries.
Dr. Jekyll wears a gold ring on his left hand pinky finger, while Mr. Hyde wears a silver ring on the same finger.
Some of the indoor sets used were sections of real houses preserved from the Victorian era.
As part of her contract while shooting in London, Julia Roberts had a jet on standby around the clock just in case she wanted to return to Los Angeles, California. This ran up a bill in excess of $120,000.
