Sir Michael Caine loved the novel and leapt at the opportunity to play Captain Nemo.

The second of two competing adaptations of the Jules Verne novel to be released in 1997. The other was a Hallmark presentation with Ben Cross as Captain Nemo.

Nemo's daughter Mara (Mia Sara) and Cabe Attucks (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) are characters created specially for this adaptation. They do not exist in the novel.

The main character, Pierre, at one point tells Caleb his concerns about Nemo's plans for explosions on the ocean floor and references a novel called, "Journey to the Center of the Earth." This novel was, in fact, another novel by Jules Verne, the same author of "20,000 Leagues under the Sea."

Ken Senga (Shimoda) was dubbed by voice over actor Doug Stone.
