Prem and Nisha meet and fall in love at the wedding of their elder siblings, but their plans to be together are put in jeopardy when Nisha's sister dies, leaving behind a baby.

Prem, a top student, is learning the ropes of business under his elder brother Rajesh and his uncle Kailashnath, a big industrialist. In another town, Nisha is studying computer science and is the darling of her elder sister, Pooja, and her parents, Professor Choudhry and Kamladevi. Fate brings the two families together and this results in the the betrothal of Rajesh and Pooja. At the wedding, Prem meets Nisha and falls in love with this carefree woman. With Pooja as the woman of the house, joy knows no bounds in Prem's family. Months pass by and Pooja becomes pregnant. Nisha is invited to come and stay with her sister and attend the traditional function before the child's birth. Nisha's arrival is like a dream come true for Prem. Nisha stays there until the birth of the child, taking over the household chores, and becoming very much a part of the family. In soft whispers, Prem and Nisha commit their love for each other and secretly dream of spending a lifetime together. Then fate strikes a cruel blow when Pooja dies after a sudden fall down a flight of stairs. Because of this tragedy, life in the house comes to a standstill. Rajesh worries about the future of his motherless child, and it causes his health to deteriorate. Nisha's father suggests that Nisha should get married to Rajesh and become the mother of Pooja's child. Prem and Nisha decide to sacrifice their love for the sake of the family. Fate intervenes once again when Rajesh comes to know the truth behind Prem and Nisha's sacrifice. Rajesh runs the business for his dad, Kailashnath, and is an eligible bachelor. The family wants him to marry Pooja Choudhury, to which he agrees. With great gusto the families get together to plan the engagement and marriage ceremonies. At these ceremonies, Rajesh's younger brother, Prem meets Pooja's younger sister, Nisha, and after a few meetings both fall in love with each other. After a few months, Pooja gives birth to a baby, but unfortunately, dies shortly thereafter. Rajesh is devastated, and the families get together and decide that it will be in the best interests of both the child and Rajesh, if Nisha were to take Pooja's place and marry Rajesh. Hence the title, simply translated means: What Is My Relationship With You? Brothers Prem (Salman Khan) and Rajesh (Mohnish Bahl) lost their parents at an early age. They live with their uncle Kailash Nath (Alok Nath) (who didn't marry himself for the sake of the kids). Rajesh manages the family business and his family is on the look-out for a suitable bride for him. Lallu Prasad (Laxmikant Berde) & Chameli (Priya Arun) are loved servants of the Nath house. Professor Mahendra Kashyap ( Ajit Vachani) and Bhagwanti Kashyap (Bindu) are good friends with Kailash. Bhagwanti wanted Rajesh to wed her brother's daughter Sweety. Sweety's younger sister is Rita (Sahila Chadha), who secretly loves Prem. Mahendra is more practical and advises Kailash that Sweety is not the right match for Rajesh.

One day, Kailash meets his college friend, Siddharth Chaudhary (Anupam Kher) (Mahendra makes the initial connection, but turns out Kailash and Siddharth studied together at college), who is now a professor, after several years. Siddharth and his wife Madhukala (Reema Lagoo) have two daughters named Pooja (Renuka Shahane) and Nisha (Madhuri Dixit). Siddharth and Kailash arrange marriage between Rajesh and Pooja. Dr. Singhal (Satish Shah) & Dr. Razia Singhal (Himani Shivpuri) are also family friends of Kailash and Dr Singhal is a big fan of Shayari.

From their first meeting, Nisha and Prem start bickering lightheartedly with each other, and the fun and mischief continue throughout Pooja and Rajesh's wedding. Siddharth & Madhukala come with Nisha to Kailash's come for the Tikka ceremony. wedding day soon arrives and Kailash and his entire wedding procession turns up at Siddharth's house for the same. The shoe hiding ceremony where Nisha outsmarts Prem and Lallu to steal Rajesh's shoes. Prem finds out where Nisha had hidden the shoes, but allows her to win.

Prem has an amicable relationship with Rajesh's loving sister-in-law Nisha. Pooja settles in the new house. Rajesh loves her a lot. They play cricket together and spend quality time.. In time, Pooja and Rajesh realize their love for each other, and it is revealed that Pooja is expecting a child. Siddharth and Madhukala are unable to come to Kailash's house for the ceremony marking the impending arrival of the baby. They send Nisha instead (Prem is sent to bring Nisha. Prem and Nisha spend a lot of time together during the journey) (Prem and Nisha also bond when they dance together at Pooja's baby shower ceremony) (Nisha also gets to see Prem's sensitive side when he is upset that Rajesh has to go abroad for work while Pooja's delivery is imminent) (In Rajesh's absence Prem shows maturity by handling the entire office), who is present at the birth. Meanwhile, Nisha and Prem fall in love with each other, but keep it a secret. Siddharth and Madhukala come over to Kailash's house to celebrate the birth of their grandchild. When the time comes to part, their hosts are dejected, especially Prem. He and Nisha promise each other that they will soon reunite forever.

Pooja is invited to stay at her parents' house, and Prem takes her there. When they arrive, Pooja learns that Prem and Nisha are in love, and gives Nisha a necklace as a token, promising to get them married. Shortly afterward, Pooja accidentally slips, falling down from the stairs, and eventually dies from a head injury. Everybody is shattered by the tragedy.

Dr Singhal suggests that Rajesh should get married again for the sake of the baby. Bhagwanti wants Rajesh to marry Sweety, but says that Sweety's condition that the baby should be raised by a maid. Mahendra slaps Bhagwanti and says because of this attitude they don't have a kid of their own. Rajest is against getting a step mother for the baby. Nisha takes good care of Pooja and Rajesh's son. Siddharth and Kailash feel that Nisha will be a great mother to the baby. They decide to have Nisha marry Rajesh. Prem keeps quiet as he wants the happiness of his brother and his baby. Nisha overhears Siddharth and Madhukala talking about her marriage into Kailash's family and thinks that they are discussing her marriage to Prem, to which she agrees. Later, at a pre-nuptial ceremony, she finds out that she is actually going to marry Rajesh.

Prem and Nisha vow to sacrifice their love for Rajesh and the son. Moments before the wedding, Nisha asks Prem's dog Tuffy to give Prem the necklace that Pooja had given her, along with a letter. Tuffy exits Nisha's room and instead of taking the letter to Prem, delivers it to Rajesh. Rajesh reads the letter and realizes that Prem and Nisha love each other. Subsequently, he halts the wedding and confronts both Nisha and Prem. In the end, Nisha and Prem marry each other with the consent of their families.
