Paul Newman in Nobody's Fool (1994)

FAQ

Nobody's Fool

FAQ

This quote, repeated by Sully (Paul Newman) at the start of the films, comes from the book 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens, as said by Marley's ghost to Ebeneezer Scrooge.

The funeral is Hattie's, who Sully picks up earlier in the film when she's walking in the street, seemingly suffering a mental lapse of some sort. Though it's not explicitly stated, in the scene you can see a bouquet with 'Hattie' written on it, as well as her daughter dressed in black.

North Bath is modelled on Ballston Spa, New York, whose geography and history align with the details given in the book and the film - specifically, proximity to Albany and the Adirondack Northway and the decline of the town coincident with the depletion of its mineral springs. A down-on-its heels town at the time the book is set, Ballston Spa has seen something of a downtown revival since then. Author Richard Russo grew up in Gloversville, 40 minutes west of Ballston Spa.

Rival and more prosperous town Schuyler Springs is modelled on Saratoga Springs, four miles north of Ballston Spa.
