AGT Gives Austin Brown a Second Chance in Season 20 — Did His Original Song Win You Over?
Image
If you’ve been keeping up with America’s Got Talent Season 20, you may remember a contestant from Episode 2 (June 3) by the name of Austin Brown.

The Nashville-based singer initially auditioned with a heartfelt performance of “When a Man Loves a Woman,” which split the judges right down the middle; Sofia Vergara and Mel B both gave instant yeses, while Howie Manel (despite calling it “really, really good”) and Simon Cowell remained unconvinced. Simon said he’d like to see Austin perform something “less generic,” but he’d have to speak with a producer about potentially setting up a second audition on another day.

Roger Ebert Gave a Rare Perfect Score to the Meg Ryan Film That Features Her Best Performance — And You Can Watch It Now on Hulu
Image
Often referred to as “America’s Sweetheart,” Meg Ryanbecame one of the most popular and successful movie stars of the 1990s. Thanks to the back-to-back successes of romantic comedy classics like When Harry Met Sally…, Joe Versus The Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail, Ryan proved that she could elevate any romantic comedy that she appeared in, as the authenticity that she brought to her roles made the films feel even more effective. Despite being best known for her winning sense of humor, Ryan delivered a devastating dramatic performance in the underrated addiction drama When A Man Loves A Woman. While When A Man Loves A Woman did not become the breakout awards contender that it should have been, it did win the praise of Roger Ebert, who awarded the film a perfect score and spoke from his own experiences with alcoholism to praise the film’s sensitive portrayal of addiction.

Every Movie & TV Show Coming To (& Leaving) Hulu in February 2025
Image
As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.

Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.

Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.

But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

Leonard Engelman, Makeup Artist on ‘Rocky IV,’ ‘Moonstruck’ and Much More, Dies at 83
Image
Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.

Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.

The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Engelman received Emmy nominations in 1972 for an episode of Night Gallery and in 2001 for the miniseries Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis,...

When the World Decided Michael Bolton Was Funny and Cool
Image
Writer Bill Zehme profiled easy-listening icon Barry Manilow for Rolling Stone in 1990, and he opened his piece with a devastating observation: “When your name is a punchline, you live in hell. Barry Manilow lives in hell.” Manilow’s fans disagreed, of course, but for the rest of us, Zehme tapped into something deeply true about our feelings regarding the adult-contemporary artist. His songs were so epically cringey that his very name came to embody something noxious. His name became a shorthand for cheesy.

Over the years, other artists have had to deal with a similar fate. Sure, they’re wildly popular, but to a contingent of music junkies, their bland, feel-good songs are anathema. For quite a while, one such artist was Michael Bolton. And in 1999, Mike Judge decided to literally make Bolton’s name a punchline in Office Space by giving one of his miserable office-drone characters (played by David Herman) the same name.

Michael Bolton's Angry Response To The Running Office Space Joke — & If He's Changed His Mind
Image
The character "Michael Bolton" in Office Space is a running gag that the real singer found frustrating at first. The movie's relatable workplace satire has gained a cult following with references and parodies in pop culture. Despite initial dislike, the real Michael Bolton has accepted the joke as part of his legacy in later years.

Michael Bolton appears in Office Space, or rather, a character named "Michael Bolton" appears in Office Space as a running gag that the real-life singer was none too pleased with. Office Space, from movie director and TV showrunner Mike Judge, is a satirical comedy about the daily drudgery of the modern workplace. A biting satire with an all-star cast that includes Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, John C. McGinley, and more, it's astounding that the comedy flopped at the box office.

However, Office Space has since developed such a large cult following.

Whatever Happened To Enola Actress Tina Majorino From Waterworld?
Image
In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.

Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Ryan Gosling Reflects on Long Film Career, From Being an Astronaut and a Getaway Driver to Becoming “A 70-Year-Old Crotchless Doll”
Image
Ryan Gosling was honored by the Santa Barbara Film Festival on Saturday night, and used his speech to reflect on his long journey to becoming Ken.

Receiving the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film at a dinner in Santa Barbara, Gosling mused how “up until this point, I’ve only ever thought about just how much cinema had done for me, I had never really thought about what I’ve done for cinema.”

He recalled how in third grade he had a swearing problem (joking, “I didn’t think it was a problem but my teachers did and I just thought they were being a bunch of uptight mother— wait.”) and struggled in school, until one of his teachers planned weekly visits to the library and made a deal that for every book the actor read he could rent a movie from the library’s collection.

Meg Ryan's New Movie Continues A Horrible 25-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Meg Ryan's new movie What Happens Later receives negative reviews, continuing her 25-year streak of poorly-reviewed films. Critics find the plot and construction of the movie problematic, with reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes stating that it lacks humor and has more serious overtones than expected. Although Meg Ryan's comedic timing and conversational style shine in the film, David Duchovny's performance falls short in matching her charisma.

Once thought of as "America's Sweetheart" because of her endearing roles in a series of romantic comedies and heartwarming films, Meg Ryan's new movie What Happens Later continues a 25-year Rotten Tomatoes streak of negative reviews. Ryan became one of the most beloved actresses in the world after moves like You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally. Since the early 2000s, however, her career has been more defined by a long run of flops and poorly reviewed films. After taking a break from acting,...

Meg Ryan And David Duchovny Are Exes Trapped In An Airport In ‘What Happens Later’: Watch The Rom-Com Trailer
Image
Meg Ryan is channelling her rom-com roots. The “When Harry Met Sally” star is endearing as ever in the trailer for “What Happens Later”, co-starring opposite David Duchovny in the new airport-set romance.

In the film, which is also co-written and directed by Ryan, the actors play former lovers who are reunited and snowed in as a storm delays their respective connecting flights. As optimist Willa (Ryan) and pessimist Bill (Duchovny) unpack their shared history, two decades after their split, their enduring personal connection appears undeniable.

“When people break up, there’s the thing that they tell each other and then there’s the truth,” Willa declares at one point. “But you never told me.”

Bill fires back, “I was in love with you! And I couldn’t turn that on and off like a switch.”

Later, Willa asks, “Have you ever wondered, ‘What if?'”

Michael Grimm, the season 5 winner of “America’s Got Talent”, is currently hospitalized and sedated amid a mysterious illness.

The 44-year-old singer’s wife, Lucie Zolverva-Grimm, took to her husband’s Instagram account on Tuesday and shared an update with friends and family about Grimm’s condition. He’s currently in intensive care and has been hospitalized since Memorial Day. In the video, Lucie described Grimm as not feeling well for some time, saying he was looking “sickly” and was “fussy.”

At first, Lucie said, she thought Grimm may have had a stroke but “that wasn’t the case.” She said there were signs he wasn’t feeling well, like lacking energy and struggling to finish recent performances. It got to the point that he could barely walk and struggled to even lift his head.

He was then taken to the hospital where his health continued to decline. He started talking...

Halloween Kills Cast Guide: Every Returning & Recast Character
Image
Halloween Kills brought back most of the cast from the 2018 version of Halloween as well as a couple of characters from the original movie. The original Halloween is now regarded as one of the most influential horror movies ever, spawning a long-running franchise that most recently completed a reboot trilogy, with Halloween Kills as its middle film. Halloween tells the story of Michael Myers, who on Halloween night 1963 murdered his older sister when he was just six years old. As a result, Michael was sent to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, where he stayed for over a decade and became Dr. Sam Loomis’ (Donald Pleasence) patient.

Fifteen years after murdering his sister, on October 30, 1978, Michael escaped and returned to his hometown Haddonfield, Illinois, where he began to stalk Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. Laurie became the only survivor of Michael’s killing spree on Halloween night and the final girl of the franchise,...

Beetlejuice Brought In Harry Belafonte's Music For Its Energy – And Its Cheap Price
Image
Today marks a sad day for the entertainment industry at large. Singer, actor, civil rights activist, and humanitarian Harry Belafonte has sadly passed away at the age of 96. Belafonte will be remembered for a great many things, but he is also one of the only artists to have a hit with the same song across two different decades. In 1956, the year of Elvis, Belafonte burst onto the charts with the timeless ear worm "Banana Boat (Day-o)" to quickly become the "King of Calypso" and create a new dance craze across the nation.

Fast forward to 1988, and the surprise success of Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" introduced the "Day-o" song to a new generation of kids when the track was featured in one of the most memorable scenes in the film. The decision to use the song for the now infamous ghostly singalong dinner scene started with a phone call to Belafonte...

35 Years Later, Beetlejuice's Soundtrack Is The Key Reason The Movie Works
Image
35 years since its release on March 30, 1988, what continues to stand out the most about Tim Burton's macabre and quirky film is its soundtrack — both the score by Danny Elfman and the inclusion of Harry Belafonte musical numbers. The eccentric mix of these sounds creates the ideal stage for Betelgeuse himself: the ghost with the most that teams up with the recently deceased Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) to haunt the pretentious, urbane Deetz family that moves into their New England-style home.

"Beetlejuice" was Tim Burton's first major feature after his breakthrough Pee-wee's Big Adventure. For the zany family film, Burton also collaborated with composer Danny Elfman, establishing a long-term creative partnership. But the "Beetlejuice" soundtrack that we all know and love almost never was.

The original screenplay by novelist Michael McDowell was decidedly grimmer, featuring a much darker alternate ending where Lydia sets herself on...

The Masked Singer (2019)
‘The Masked Singer’ Sends Home a Lone Wolf: And the Man Behind the Mask Is…
The Masked Singer (2019)
A hero’s welcome was certainly waiting for Wolf on Wednesday night’s DC superhero-themed episode of “The Masked Singer,” but unfortunately, he was also the lone wolf contestant sent home at the end of the night. So, who was beneath the mask?

Well, the first sentence up above should be a clue, if you didn’t get to watch things live. But, Wolf had some clues delivered by some actual DC superheroes during his appearance, too. Both Helen Mirren and Zachary Levi appeared on the episode, in support of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which hits theaters next week.

Competing against Gargoyle and Squirrel, both also newcomers to the show, Wolf entered the competition with absolutely zero clues in advance. No teases on social media, no sneak peeks, nothing. Even so, “Masked Singer” fans are devoted, and made guesses based on body type alone. And apparently, some folks thought Wolf could be David Hasselhoff,...

Hulu New Releases: March 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Everything Coming to Hulu in March 2023
Image
It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.

If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

When a Man Loves a Woman: The To Leslie of the ’90s Rom-Com Craze
Image
The decade of the 90s was absolutely bursting with romantic comedies. Between Meg Ryan in films like Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, and French Kiss and Julia Roberts in my Best Friend's Wedding, Runaway Bride, and Notting Hill, the two leading ladies pretty much cornered the market on the genre. But one role that Ryan took on was a complete departure for her. In the midst of her run of rom-coms, Ryan played an alcoholic mother of two young girls in the 1994 family drama film, When a Man Loves a Woman, opposite Andy García. There is very little romance and absolutely no comedy in this one. The role was a powerful one that details the life of an upper-middle-class woman living in San Francisco who starts to struggle with the vicissitudes of everyday life and parenting small children and turns to alcohol to deal with her anxieties. Ryan received...

Click here to read the full article.

Amanda Mackey, the busy casting director who worked on The Fugitive and four other films for director Andrew Davis and shared an Emmy nomination for populating Larry Kramer‘s The Normal Heart, has died. She was 70.

Mackey died Saturday at Calvary Hospital in Brooklyn after a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of blood cancer, longtime business partner Cathy Sandrich Gelfond told The Hollywood Reporter.

She received one Artios Award for her work on A League of Their Own (1993) and shared another one with Sandrich Gelfond for Smokin’ Aces (2006) — she collected 15 Artios nominations in all — and the pair were featured in the eye-opening 2012 documentary Casting By.

Mackey was “an unwaveringly steadfast friend and champion in a time when women weren’t as supportive to other women as they are now,” Sandrich Gelfond said in a statement. “She believed in me, lifted me up and gave me a career.

‘Schmigadoon!’ Creator Cinco Paul Reflects on First Comedy Script ‘Band of Gold’ — and Still Hopes to Get It Made
Image
In Variety’s feature, The One That Got Away, Emmy nominees reflect on one of their projects that never saw the light of day, was canceled too soon or that they’d like to revisit some day.

Picture it: Southern California, 1994.

Cinco Paul is fresh out of USC School of Cinematic Arts, churning out his first post-grad comedy script — an homage to screwball comedies including “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Bringing Up Baby,” called “Band of Gold.”

“At the time, there were big splashy spec sales happening all over the place and this was mine,” he says. “It kind of launched my career, but unfortunately, it never got made.”

Nearly 30 years later, Paul, the creator and Emmy-nominated lyricist of Apple TV+’s musical love letter “Schmigadoon!,” has never lost his wistful fondness for the script, which had been bought by Sony and even attached a few directors.

Had it made it to the screen,...

Was 1992 the Worst Grammys Ever?
Image
Anyone who feels the Grammy Awards can be stodgy today might want to consider how far the show has come since the 1990s.

Not only was it an utterly abysmal time for fashion — The hair! The shoulder pads! The big, stiff suits! — but the music industry was riding the CD boom, which took profits to hitherto-unimagined heights and made hubris balloon even faster: The titans of the industry thought, as they often do, “We have made it, we’ll just keep doing exactly the same thing over and over and the masses will give us more and more money!” The sounds of the future — hip-hop, alternative, heavy metal — got obligatory new categories as a patronizing pat on the head for “the youngsters”. By the early 1990s, the Grammy voting body had become ever more out-of-touch, complacent, arrogant and, most of all, old.

This situation may have reached its lowest point...

Paramount Pictures on Tuesday said it will merge its Paramount Players banner into the Paramount Pictures motion picture group under the leadership of co-heads Daria Cercek and Michael Ireland.

And as a result of the realignment, Paramount Players president Jeremy Kramer will be stepping down from his position. He previously reported to CEO and president Brian Robbins.

Grammys 2022: Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, and more could join list of artists who have won for cover songs
Image
When looking at Grammy nominations for 2022, you might notice that there are a few cover songs nominated. As per Grammy rules, a cover can only be submitted in a performance category or in an arrangement category; they’re not eligible for songwriting since they were written in a previous eligibility period, or sometimes before the Grammys were even created. This year I think three covers seem to be in a good position to win: Jason Isbell’s “All I Do is Drive,” Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and Chris Cornell’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” But just how common is it for covers to prevail?

Country is one of the fields with the most covers winning. A few of the most recent wins have included “Gentle On My Mind” by The Band Perry (originally performed by John Hartford), “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker...
