The Syndicate producer Rollem is developing short film Youthless into a TV series as one of its first projects since the passing of founder Kay Mellor.
The Yorkshire, UK-based indie has optioned rights to Jordon Scott Kennedy’s script and is working it up for television.
The series will precede events featured in the short and is being built as a returning drama series, though no broadcaster is attached yet. The short explores ‘adultification’ from the point of view of kids growing up on a forgotten council estate in rural West Yorkshire. Envisaged as a black and white trilogy following Jud Donlan’s life over three summer holidays before entering the adult world, Rollem claims “Never has childhood been represented so unflinchingly.”
The “brutally honest” show is based on Scott Kennedy’s own experiences growing up on the Dewsbury Moor Estate.

In Variety’s feature, The One That Got Away, Emmy nominees reflect on one of their projects that never saw the light of day, was canceled too soon or that they’d like to revisit some day.
Picture it: Southern California, 1994.
Cinco Paul is fresh out of USC School of Cinematic Arts, churning out his first post-grad comedy script — an homage to screwball comedies including “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Bringing Up Baby,” called “Band of Gold.”
“At the time, there were big splashy spec sales happening all over the place and this was mine,” he says. “It kind of launched my career, but unfortunately, it never got made.”
Nearly 30 years later, Paul, the creator and Emmy-nominated lyricist of Apple TV+’s musical love letter “Schmigadoon!,” has never lost his wistful fondness for the script, which had been bought by Sony and even attached a few directors.

Just over a week after her “Game of Thrones” brother-lover Nikolaj Coster-Waldau joined a pilot at FX, Lena Headey has been a cast in a pilot of her own.
The actress, who was most recently seen under a pile of rubble in the final episode of the HBO mega hit, will play the title character in “Rita,” an hour-long dramedy which has received a pilot production order at Showtime.
Headey’s character in the new project is described as a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother who takes on every kind of authority – as well as her family – in a messy and unfiltered way.
The pilot is being written and executive produced by Christian Torpe and is based on his original Danish series. Headey is also on board as an executive producer.

Lionsgate’s musical took the best musical or comedy award at the 74th awards show on Sunday night.
Moments earlier, Emma Stone, who kicked off awards season with the Coppa Volpi win in Venice last autumn, had been named best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in the film. Stone dedicated her win to aspiring actors around the world.
La La Land converted all seven of its nominations on the night. Shortly before Stone’s award, writer-director Damien Chazelle picked up the screenplay prize following his earlier win for best director.
Collecting the directing prize earlier in the night, Chazelle thanked his producers “for not blanching at what must have seemed like an utterly insane proposition.”
La La Land’s Ryan Gosling won best performance by an actor in a motion picture - musical or comedy and star struck a sober note as he accepted his award.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Sunday's eagerly awaited Game of Thrones premiere gave fans plenty to talk about: The fantasy hit's first-ever flashback scene starred Mean Girl Cersei, a game-changing conversation between Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Varys (Conleth Hill) demanded a singularly unique recap, Daario's (Michiel Huisman) butt made a return appearance and one recurring character was subject to a brutal burning at the stake (a.k.a. what HBO's lawyers are planning to do to whoever leaked its Thrones screeners online).
