Michael Dobbs, the author of the original book, was angered at the opening scene depicting Margaret Thatcher's funeral. As a result he demanded his name be removed from the credits which just say "Based on the novel The Final Cut" without mentioning his name.
Helen Mirren (who has credited Ian Richardson as being her acting mentor) was originally offered the role of Claire Carlsen but had to decline the part.
Three of the central cast of this series had appeared previously in the Indiana Jones series of films, directed by Steven Spielberg: Paul Freeman had appeared as the main villain, Belloq, in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981); Isla Blair and Kevork Malikyan had appeared in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), in their respective roles of Mrs Donovan and Kazim.
