The screenwriter Robert Kuhn has stated that a part of the script that was deleted before filming began involved Erik always throwing rocks at things and missing. This is a leftover from that idea. The beginning of the scene shows Erik throwing a rock at a garbage can and missing. When he throws the rock at Tyler he isn't expecting to hit him. He looks shocked when he actually does.
