Originally conceptualized and filmed when Larry Fassender was a student at NYU. The 1997 version is technically a remake.
Sam's line, "We live as we dream. Alone. Who said that?" is a reference to Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. The rest of the quotation reads, "While the dream disappears, the life continues painfully." It suggests that despite living in a shared world, each individual experiences life and their internal world (dreams) in isolation. The quote is often interpreted to highlight the inherent loneliness and separateness of human existence, referring both to Sam's emotional turmoil and grief at the loss of his father (and his spiraling alcoholism), and to Anna's 'life' as a vampire.
