Raj Babbar initially wanted to produce and direct the film. He approached Govinda for the film, but Govinda's brother Kirti Kumar rejected the offer. Kirti told Babbar the film would not run for a day. Raj Babbar told Kirti he was ruining Govinda's career they way Navin Nischol's brother ruined his. Eventually Babbbar gave Dayal Nihalani the film to direct and took Javed Jafferey for the role offered to Govinda.

There was speculation that Javed Jaffery was on drugs during the film. The first incident was when he was in his car with some dancers and the car was full of smoke. The second incident was when he sprained his thumb while practicing his dance. Producer Kishen Babbar spoke to Javed, but Javed denied all allegations.
