Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1990)
We’ve been hearing rumblings of a reboot of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise for a long time. Seventeen years, in fact. The new Killer Tomatoes movie unveiled a promo video over the weekend (you can watch that in the embed above) and also has a presence at San Diego Comic-Con, where JoBlo’s own Mike Conway was able to catch up with several cast members and one of the producers!

Bull Airs celebrates the 40th anniversary of The Return of the Living Dead with Tarman and Punk Caddy shoes
Image
Forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead, and while the film reached theatres on August 16, 1985, many of its fans will be watching it today or tomorrow, as they do every year, since the film begins with text on the screen showing that its events begin at 5:30pm Eastern time on July 3, 1984 and stretch on into the morning of July 4th. To celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary (and the 41st anniversary of the events depicted in the film), Bull Airs has announced that they will be accepting pre-orders on two different limited edition Return of the Living Dead-inspired shoes: the Punk Caddy short horn low top and the Tarman short horn low tops. You can see images of the shoes at the bottom of this article. They’re expected...

'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes' Franchise Gets New Sequel After 30 Years
Image
If you had killer tomatoes on your 2025 bingo card, you're in luck. The beloved cult classic franchise that began in 1978 is back with a new sequel titled Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, which promises to "pit the eternal power of nature against AI's best and brightest." Directed by David Ferino, this will be the first feature film in the franchise since 1992, and the fifth overall in the zany series that mixes horror, comedy, and parody.

Perhaps the best part of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is its amazing cast, which includes the likes of David Koechner (Anchorman) as the U.S. president's Press Secretary, and Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier) as the film's first victim. John Astin (Gomez from The Addams Family) is also on board to reprise his role of Professor Nicholas Mortimer Gangreen from previous movies, as is Oscar-nominee Eric Roberts. Samantha Bailey (The Listening) will play Kate Patel,...

6 Horror Movie Tie-In Games That Time Forgot
Image
Musician Brian Eno once claimed that the limitations of a medium are exactly what people will miss about it once those limitations are gone. That’s probably why so many modern horror titles opt to embrace styles and mechanics that were once criticized for being cheap and obtuse (like low-poly graphics and tank controls). If you ask me, I’d also argue that this is why we’ve seen a resurgence in movie tie-in games despite licensed productions once being considered the scourge of the video game industry.

And in honor of recent releases like RetroRealms Arcade (which is actually way more enjoyable than most of the licensed titles it’s trying to emulate), we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six retro horror movie tie-in games that time forgot. After all, from the Commodore 64 to the Atari 2600, there are plenty of old video games that benefit from some spooky source material.

The genres we’ll be focusing on at JoBlo TV are Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Thrillers – but for the month of October, we were celebrating Halloween all month long with our JoBlotober event. It was all horror all the time… and while the event is now over, as Halloween has come and gone, two of the three movies we released this week were still JoBlotober horror releases.

The movies that have been released on JoBlo TV over the last week are the slasher Death Cast, the supernatural horror film Pumpkins, and (to kick off November) the action fantasy film Game of Dragons. Here’s some information on each one of them:

Robot Ninja: The Official Novelization is now available from Encyclopocalypse Publications
Image
1989 was the year director J.R. Bookwalter’s debut feature, the zombie epic The Dead Next Door (which Sam Raimi not-so-secretly had a hand in), made its way out into the world – and it also happens be the year when his follow-up feature, the “dark, splatter-drenched” oddball comic book homage Robot Ninja (watch it Here) was released. Thirty-five years later, Robot Ninja has now received the novelization treatment and the result, Robot Ninja: The Official Novelization by Damien Casey, is now available from Encyclopocalypse Publications! Copies can be purchased at This Link.

Shot in Ohio for $15,000, with David DeCoteau credited as an executive producer, Robot Ninja features cameos by Burt Ward (best known for playing Robin in the ’60s Batman TV series) and legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley and has the following synopsis: Leonard Miller (Michael Todd) is a frustrated artist. His publisher (Burt Ward) and his agent (Mike Shea) are...

Tatsuki Fujimoto Pulled the Biggest Prank on Chainsaw Man Fans and Got His X Account Banned In Return
Image
Typically, a manga’s popularity sees an enormous boost after being adapted into an anime; however, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man is an exception. It has been one of the highest-selling manga series and has an across-the-board fanbase due to its lively and enjoyable characters and intriguing theme.

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man

To write relatable characters who can click with the audience, the author needs to have a similar personality and should interact with the audience. Tatsuki Fujimoto constantly achieves this via his X account, where he disguises himself as his little sister; however, the biography of Fujimoto’s sister account states that she is in her third year of elementary school, making her around 12 years old, which resulted in X banning the account.

10 '90s Cartoons That Tried Too Hard and Failed
Image
'90s cartoons that went "X-treme" often struggled to find success, pushing limits but failing to entertain audiences consistently. Disney's revamp of Nickelodeon's Doug led to major changes and a tone that left viewers missing the old charm of the original series. Shows like Yo Yogi! attempted to update classic characters for a '90s audience but missed the mark, leading to a lack of interest and eventual cancellation.

Not all '90s cartoons were iconic, and on many occasions, the shows that tried hardest often found themselves failing. The '90s, famously dubbed as "X-treme," were distinguished by an over-the-top attitude in entertainment. Saturated in neon and reflecting a countercultural vibe adopted by society, there was a relentless drive to push limits, pull out all the stops, and put on a show that would shake things up. However, going to the "X-treme" didn't always guarantee success, and history...

Smell the Tomato: ‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes’ Brand Revives… With Official Perfumes and Candles?!
Image
Five years after a reboot of the 1970s cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was announced – and then never actually made – the brand has returned in an unexpected way.

Yes, the Austin-based movie-inspired fragrance house Xyrena has taken the burgeoning popularity of tomato scents and formulated the first of the ‘killer’ variety.

Developed exclusively in collaboration with the creators of the cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! franchise, “this enchanting, garden-fresh fragrance opens with a citrusy top note of sweet tangerine, transitioning seamlessly into vegetal mid notes of green stems, (killer) tomato leaf, and freshly cut grass. The filmic fragrance comes to a dramatic climax with an earthy base of wild fern, wet soil, genuine Indonesian patchouli, and South African Buchu.”

“When people hear ‘tomato fragrance,’ they might initially be taken aback. However, the scent is surprisingly pleasant, fresh, and earthy,” said Killian Wells, Xyrena’s CEO and head perfumer.

Splice novelization coming from Claire Donner and Encyclopocalypse Publications

Fourteen years have gone by since director Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film Splice (watch it Here) reached theatres – and now Fangoria has broken the news that Splice is finally getting the novelization treatment! This novelization has been written by Claire Donner, “New York City and online branch director of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, who has written essays for Severin Films’ releases of Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore, The Sect, and The Church“, and is coming our way from Encyclopocalypse Publications, the company that’s also behind such novelizations as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Redneck Zombies, Re-Animator, Wishmaster, Fright Night, and more.

Scripted by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor, Splice had the following synopsis: Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by splicing animal DNA to create hybrids for medical use at the company N.E.R.D. (Nucleic Exchange Research...

10 Best Inanimate Object Horror Movie Villains
Image
When it comes to the killers in horror movies, they usually take on a form that is typical of the villains of the genre. Whether a masked murderer like Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees or a scary spirit similar to The Lipstick Face Demon from the Insidious franchise, the antagonists are sentient entities that are mostly alive and thriving in these frightening flicks. However, not all movie monsters are created equal, with some of them coming in the form of inanimate objects that one would generally think of as innocuous but are instead proven to be quite deadly.

From tasty tomatoes in the classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes to a pair of stylish pants in the more recent release Slaxx, horror movies have managed to make something as simple as a lamp or a lone car tire into something deadly. At a glance, all of these evil inanimate...

One Popular Chainsaw Man Hero Was Actually Inspired By South Park
Image
Chainsaw Man's Power was inspired by South Park's Eric Cartman, showcasing Fujimoto's tendency to reference Western media. Power shares similarities with Cartman as both are selfish sociopaths who prioritize their own needs over others. Fujimoto's references to Western media in Chainsaw Man and his previous work align with the theme of challenging societal expectations influenced by pop culture.

One popular Chainsaw Man hero was, surprisingly enough, inspired by a South Park character. One of the trademarks of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s writing style is how his stories will constantly make references to various Western media, most notably movies. Sometimes, this will only come out in small references like in a chapter title or someone just namedropping a movie or celebrity, but there are also many instances where something from a movie will be lifted wholesale for Fujimoto’s story such as a scene or an entire character model.

Camp Nightmare: The 10 Best Campy Horror Movies That Will Make You Scream (with Laughter)
Image
Welcome to Camp Nightmare, where we're about to embark on a wild adventure through the wacky world of campy horror movies. The moon casts an eerie glow on the haunted cabins, and the rustling leaves whisper tales of horror. Gather 'round the campfire, fellow thrill-seekers, as we invite you into the twisted world of camp. Not summer camp, but camp camp. These delectably cheesy flicks have achieved legendary status, eliciting uproarious laughter and spine-tingling cringes in equal measure.

Before we delve into the world of campy horror movies though, we should probably answer the question: What is camp? It's the B-movie that's loud and proud. The intentionally over-the-top horror movie that winks at the audience, saying, “Sure, we might be cheesy and predictable, but isn't that part of the bloody charm?” Camp is a whirlwind of blood-splattered delight, where rubber monsters and questionable dialogue collide in a gleeful explosion of entertainment.

This Parody Film Is the Most Underrated Campy ‘80s Movie
Image
When one thinks of the camp films of the 1980s - and there are many, many to choose from - what comes to mind are classics like Xanadu, Flash Gordon, and Mommie Dearest. There is one, however, that doesn't get the love it deserves. It's a sequel to the classic “so bad it’s good” film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and given the original's cutting-edge special effects, Oscar-level acting, and memorable soundtrack, one would be forgiven for being unaware – or in complete disbelief – that it spawned a sequel, let alone a franchise. Yes, a franchise: three sequels and an animated television series. It certainly would not be much of a stretch to assume that these sequels are just as bad, if not worse, than Attack, and to give them a pass as a result. To do so, however, is to miss out on its first sequel, and the most...

A novelization of the 1978 cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is on the way from Encyclopocalypse Publications! Written by Jeff Strand, the book will be released everywhere on April 14th and we have all the details:

"In 1978, the screenwriting trio of John DeBello, Costa Dillon, and Stephen Peace cultivated a demented seedling of an idea into the horror-comedy Attack of the Killer Tomatoes; in 2023, Encyclopocalypse Publications is uprooting the vine-ripened viscousness once again. Penned by Stoker-award-winning author Jeff Strand and releasing on April 14th, the cult smash that launched a franchise spanning more than four decades will be ready to roll into your library.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes follows the tribulations of Mason Dixon, frontman for a motley crew of do-gooders tasked by the President to discover why the once-peaceful produce has unleashed hell upon humankind. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1990)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Reboot Has Officially Started Production
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1990)
Did you know that an Attack of the Killer Tomatoes reboot was happening? Nobody would blame anyone for letting that little bit of news slip under the radar, as word of the project first surfaced about a year ago during San Diego Comic-Con 2018 when an onslaught of other pop culture news was flooding its way online. But this movie is absolutely happening and director Dustin Ferguson has confirmed that production is officially underway.

It seems fitting that news of the reboot kicking off filming should come as this year's San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing. At the present time, details are virtually non-existent for the project. We can safely assume it will involve large, mutated tomatoes that are terrorizing humanity with a certain brave group of humans banding together to stop them. In any event, we know the movie is filming because Dustin Ferguson took to Facebook to confirm...

Review: "Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes" 25Th Anniversary Edition From Mvd
By Todd Garbarini

Movie-going audience members under the age of forty will not recall motion picture theatrical exhibition in the 1970s. It was a most interesting time when drive-ins and even first-run movie theaters would pair up an older feature film, generally one that was one to two years-old, with the main feature on a double-bill. A handful of theaters in my area used to engage in midnight showings of older films, too. One theater exclusively ran The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) for years while another alternated between Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards (1971), Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same (1976), David Lynch's art-house favorite Eraserhead (1977) and Alan Parker's Pink Floyd The Wall (1982). Other showcases included uncensored bloopers featuring Carol Burnett, the Three Stooges, and Abbott and Costello.

In October 1978, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was unleashed upon the moviegoing public (filming...

Donuts Are Out For Revenge in Ridiculously Goofy Trailer For Attack Of The Killer Donuts
"We've eaten them for years, now it's their turn!"

A whacky trailer has dropped for an absurd but amusing looking film called Attack of the Killer Donuts. When you watch the trailer, you'll see that the movie looks just as crazy and ridiculous as you'd think it would look with a title like that. Here's the synopsis:

A chemical accident in a sleepy town turns ordinary donuts into bloodthirsty monsters. Unaware of the donuts danger, Johnny, Michelle and Howard sell them to unsuspecting customers. When the donuts start eating their victims, the only way the three friends can save their sleepy town is to track down the Killer Donuts down and destroy them. The final standoff is where it all began: Dandy Donuts.

Yeah, the concept is stupid as hell, but you know what, some people might enjoy the stupidity of it. Hey, if a movie like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes...

The Bottom Shelf: Return Of The Killer Tomatoes, He Never Died
Nick Aldwinckle Aug 10, 2016

Blood Bath, The Beast With 1,000,000 Eyes and Return Of The Killer Tomatoes: it's our latest DVD and Blu-ray round-up...

Britain is in a state of turmoil, with Brexit, political leadership spinning out of control and social media civil war already underway. As such, it has perhaps never been a more appropriate time for a release of John De Bello and Stephen Peace’s 1988 meditation on the path towards peace and racial tolerance, Return Of The Killer Tomatoes, out on Arrow Bluray.

Set ten years after the events of the Great Tomato War, as depicted in uncompromising detail in De Bello and Peace’s earlier epic, Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes, tomatoes – following the mutant, sentient, strain responsible for the deaths of many citizens – are now outlawed in the Us. As with all the best banned items, killer tomatoes have now gone underground, with a thriving black market...
