The book on which this movie is based, "Shiloh", by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, was the 1992 winner of the John Newberry Medal. The Newberry Medal is the highest award given to American-written literature for young adults.

Kelsey Grammer was offered the role of Ray Preston. He loved the script and was adamant about doing the film but his contract from his TV show Fraiser (1993) prevented him from playing the part.
When it came time for the movies sequel Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season (1999) Blake Heron was replaced by Zachary Browne as Marty due to an ongoing drug problem Heron had.
