At the time of filming, the movie had the largest painted scenic backdrop ever used in a film.
The morning after the film's L.A. premiere, Christian Slater reported to Ventura City jail to begin a 90-day prison sentence for drug offenses, assault and battery. He would be released after 57 days and enrolled in an anti-addiction program immediately after.

Director Mikael Solomon was hired to direct this film based on his work on James Cameron's grueling filming of "The Abyss" in which most of the sets were in underwater tanks much like this film required.
