Cupcakes were a novel new dessert treat at the time. They experienced a gourmet resurgence decades later, thanks, in part, to the TV series Sex and the City.
The careful attention to design detail is wonderful here, even the pesky fly's antics are accurately depicted. The candy train is just a delight, and has all the correct working parts. Confections were hugely popular then (and still are). Adults and kids alike would have marveled at the sweets portrayed.
Very likely at least part of the inspiration for the popular board game "Candy Land," which came out in 1948.
