The Fox and the Grapes (1941)

Trivia

The Fox and the Grapes

Edit
The first Fox and Crow cartoon. The film's basic premise and episodic structure were an influence on Chuck Jones's Road Runner cartoons.
Beautiful attention to detail in nature is shown here, likely a wink and nod at the recent Disney offerings "Silly Symphonies" of the era.
Eslop's Fables is a spoof on the Aesop's Fables tome.
Two days after this short's release, the Pearl Harbor attack happened, marking the U.S.' entry into WW2. Lavish picnics as illustrated here would soon be replaced with mandatory rationing to support the war effort along with sight gags and in jokes about it. And the end credits show the Columbia torch bearer draped in a U.S. flag, though that detail might have been added later.
The crow bears a resemblance to future Terrytoons characters, Heckle and Jeckle. The wisecracking magpies first appeared in 1946.
