Although written off by the media as an experimental film that would fail, the film received critical praise . It was commercially successful by completing 266 days at the Sinipriya complex theater in Madurai and 177 days at the Midland theater in Chennai.
This film ran for 100 days in many theatre's at Tamilnadu. It ran for 266 days at the Sinipriya complex theater in Madurai and 177 days at the Midland theater in Chennai, 133 days at the Bharat theater in Chennai, 126 days at the Rajakumari theater in Chennai and 106 days at the Prabath & Padmaamani theaters in Trichy and 113 days at the Raaja theater in Coimbatore and 63 days at the Taj theater Vellore and 127 days at the Gaity & Central theaters in Colombo, SriLanka.
Although Composer Ilaiyaraaja wanted singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam to sing songs "Aatukutti" and "Chavanthi Poo", SP Balasubramanyam had pharyngitis at that time and was replaced by singer Malaysia Vasudevan
