Yes, it is based on a manga series written by Buronson and illustrated by Tetsuo Hara. It was published by Shueisha in Japan from September 13, 1983 to August 8, 1988. It was published by Shueisha and lasted for twenty seven volumes. In North America, it was published by Viz Media in 1989 and then again from 1995-1997. It was relicened by Gutsoon! Entertainment from 2003-2004.
There are two endings. The second alternate ending wasn't available to Discotek Media though when they re-licensed it for USA distribution.
The Italian VHS and a German DVD release has uncensored footage, and this is the ONLY release that has it uncensored.
