José Luis Borau, director of this film, defined it as "A story of Ingmar Bergman, but in deep Spain".
The title of the film comes from the final verses of the poem "Villancico", written in 1972 by Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio: "Si entre la carne y el verbo / imposible fue el amor, / niño nadie, niño nunca, / niño nada, niño no".
