Absolutely brilliant

A rare gem penalized by distribution in the Seventies but rightly praised by most critics today. Bellocchio gives a very personal rendition of Cechov' s drama and thanks to Agosti's editing and great cast performances reaches outstanding results. Laura Betti's character is different fron the original one but so powerful to steal the scene. Remo Girone is perfect in his role and pierces the screen. Pamela Villoresi, Giulio Brogi and the rest of the cast are very good too. Also, I have to praise the choice of locations, Casale sul Sile near Treviso, a very lucky invention that added to the film a unique atmosphere, like Nicola Piovani's musical score. Not just a meditation about art, as you may read sometimes, but on human condition, love and meaning of life.

not brilliant

This movie is a faithfully adaptation of the seagull of Cechov, direct by a very good director and played by fine actors. The only problem, for me, is that no one suited the character and no one really played it in an appropriate manner. perhaps since they were actually famous, the just play the drama in a way to show how skilled, intense and sexy actors they are and scarcely bored in rendering the spirit of the work of Cechov. If you are interesting to saw an Italian version of a play from A.Cechov better to stick with a more classic versions,I would suggest the Seagull directed by Orazio Costa or the classic The Cherry Orchard by Giorgio Strehler, both available on the tube.
