When the film was being pitched as something altogether darker and closer in tone to the original graphic novel; Nicolas Cage and Christopher Walken were considered for roles played by Brendan Fraser and Whoopi Goldberg, respectively.
Ben Stiller was original cast to voice "Monkeybone" but had to step down due to complications with Mystery Men (1999).
Chris Kattan plays a gymnast who died from a broken neck. In real life, Kattan actually broke his neck during a sketch on Saturday Night Live (1975).
The movie makes allusion to many elements of Greek mythology: the Cyclops, the Minotaur, the Centaur, Medusa, Scorpion; and even Hypnos, the god of dreams.
