            Lost In Elstree

Yet another unfunny Leslie Fuller farce. One of the writers is John Paddy Carstairs who would become a director in years to come. His idea of comedy is a stuttering legionnaires. Two notable members of the cast are Betty Field, sister of Gracie and Renee Houston who was a double act with her sister on the halls. The plot, such as it is,concerns Fuller and Gordon's adventures in the foreign legion. There are British comedies of this era that are far more deserving of a dvd release than this load of rubbish.

A Lot Of Talent Is Wasted Here

Leslie Fuller and Hal Gordon find themselves in the French Foreign Legion, assigned to a fort under the cruel tyranny of sergeant Alf Goddard. Meanwhile, Renee Houston and Betty Fields are two dancers at a nearby bar, who find themselves kidnapped for the harem of evil H. F. Maltby. Fuller and Gordon break out of the brig to rescue them.

Fuller (1888-1948) was a song-and-dance man who appeared in more than two dozen movies. Most of them were burlesques of popular genres, and this is his Foreign Legion one, with the plot stopping an starting so he can do extended gags. There are the usually slapstick and cross-talk routines, as well as a sequence in which Fuller and Gordon are dressed up like Arab women.

            • Trivia
The cast list is incomplete as there are several roles in the film that are not credited e.g. the Arab prison guards, the Italian legionnaire, various other legionnaires, members of the ship's crew, Ali Ben Ali.
            • Goofs
When the Sergeant is putting Bill and some other soldiers through drill, some soldiers have their trousers tucked into their boots whilst other have their trousers over their boots. The Sergeant should not allow this - all men should be dressed and kitted alike.
