Stephen Colbert is a tough nut to crack when asking the hard questions. The Late Show featured several actors, journalists, and even politicians who couldn’t get out without answering the host. In 2017, the allegations against Harvey Weinstein created one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood.

Several known names came under fire for their alleged association with the disgraced mogul, and one such name was Ben Affleck. The former Batman actor had worked with Weinstein’s company Miramax earlier in his career. However, that was not all Affleck was also under the microscope because of an accusation of sexual harassment against him. Colbert took the opportunity to clear the air and push the actor into a corner by directing the alleged rumor at him.

Kim Kardashian is pairing with La La Anthony and Kenya Barris for her first-look deal at 20th Television: They’ll be adapting “The Love Playbook,” the New York Times best-seller co-written by Anthony, for Hulu.
The reality TV star’s deal with the studio will see her developing dramas, comedies and limited series.
“I’m incredibly interested in telling stories that are personal, complicated, relevant, from my own experiences and those familiar to me. I had a front row seat to working with the exceptional team at 20th Television during ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’, and I’m so excited to dive into developing my first wave of television projects with the team led by Karey Burke and Eric Schrier, and to continue working alongside Craig Erwich and his entire group at Hulu and Disney,” said Kardashian in a statement shared with TheWrap.
Anthony will star in the series and executive produce alongside Kardashian.

Music fans, think back to the turn of the 21st century. The compact disc was still the medium of choice, Total Request Live was appointment television, and world premieres of highly-anticipated music videos were always preceded by episodes of MTV’s Making the Video. With half-hour installments, Making the Video showcased the conception, production, and even post-production of music videos from some of the 2000s’ hottest artists and bands. The show, which petered out in 2010, turns 25 years old on July 11, and devotees can still find episodes on YouTube, including ones starring the artists below. Britney Spears Spears got her Alias on in her “Toxic” music video — and shared steamy scenes with Tyson Beckford and Martin Henderson — as she slipped into and out of disguises and went from one action sequence to the next. “This villain girl, she’ll do anything to get what she wants,” Spears said of her character.

December 31, 1999. Those old enough to remember know what a strange time that was. It was a time filled with excitement, anxiety, and uncertainty around what was going to happen when the clock struck midnight and a new millennium would begin.
Director Kyle Mooney and writer Evan Winter take that momentous evening and absolutely run with it in the insane nostalgia-filled comedy Y2K.
Y2K was nothing like I was expecting. If this is a film you are interested in seeing, and you religiously watched Total Request Live on MTV and know every word to “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, I would probably recommend you stop reading this review right now and see this movie the first opportunity you get.
Mooney, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, made his directorial debut with Brigsby Bear in 2017. The film was one of my favorites of the year as it combined awkward humour with incredible sincerity.

Dave Sirulnick spent nearly three decades at MTV, helping launch the signature “Week in Rock” news franchise and overseeing “Total Request Live” — as well as reality series including “Laguna Beach,” “Cribs” and “My Super Sweet 16.” He spearheaded MTV’s Video Music Awards, as well as its ground-breaking “Choose or Lose” presidential campaign coverage and news programming stemming from world events such as Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2003 war in Iraq. Sirulnick rose to executive vice president for multiplatform production, news and music for MTV before departing in 2015 as part of a major Viacom reorg. With the news that Paramount Global has eliminated the last vestiges of MTV News (which had already been significantly downsized), Variety asked Sirulnick — now president of entertainment at RadicalMedia — to share his thoughts.

Like most pop stars, MTV found that it needed to reinvent itself every decade in the race to stay relevant. However, from its early never-ending jukebox days through the TV animation hits, the Total Request Live era, and finally the reality show years, one constant remained: MTV News. Starting in 1987 with The Week in Rock, MTV News anchor Kurt Loder brought Generation X teens music news, treating it with the same gravity as the PBS Newshour and his audience’s intelligence with respect. For many of us, he was our first news anchor, and MTV News was the way to stay informed.

After some technical difficulties, Netflix’s Love Is Blind Season 4 reunion aired on Sunday evening. While fans of the show were abuzz with their hot takes about the contestants during the reunion and after, they were also quite vocal about one of the hosts: Vanessa Lachey. Here’s what some fans of the show are saying about the actor/model, as well as her hosting background.
Vanessa Lachey | Desiree Navarro/Getty Images What ‘Love Is Blind’ fans are saying about Vanessa Lachey’s hosting capabilities after the Season 4 reunion
Maybe even more than Jackie, maybe even more than Irina, Vanessa seems to be getting a lot of flak from fans after the Season 4 reunion. People aren’t exactly on board with the way she hosts.

(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
The year was 1998. The MTV series "Total Request Live" determined what was cool, "Dawson's Creek" aired its first episode and inspired a whole generation of overly eloquent teens, and "Titanic" was the biggest movie of the year. It felt like "Titanic" was the biggest movie of all time, because, well, it was. After it premiered in 1997, it stayed at the top of the box office for a ridiculously long time. "Titanic" fever was a thing, with reminders of the movie wherever you turned. Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" was everywhere — the radio, the mall, and of course on TV — and getting away from Rose (Kate Winslet), Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), and that big sinking ship was pretty much impossible.

Carson Daly recalls his harrowing experience at Woodstock '99 well. Due to the new Netflix documentary "Trainwreck: Woodstock '99," which details the festival, the infamous event has been on the former talk-show host's mind more than usual.
"I've been getting asked about #woodstock99 a ton recently," he wrote in an Aug. 12 Instagram post. "All I can say is I thought I was going to die. It started off great, Trl live from the side of main stage interviewing all the bands (like Jay from Jamiroquai) & started getting pelted with bottles, rocks, lighters, all of it. It got insane, fast. Nightfall, Limp [Bizkit] plays 'Break Stuff' & the prisoners were officially running the prison."
Eventually, he and his team decided to escape. "My boss @MTV Dave says to our staff/crew backstage, 'We can no longer guarantee your safety, it's time to go!' I remember being in a production van driving recklessly...

And you thought Nate Burleson replacing Anthony Mason would be the only new part of “CBS This Morning” this fall. On Tuesday, CBS News unveiled an overall rebranding of its flagship morning program, which after Labor Day will be known as “CBS Mornings.” The “reimagined morning news program,” in the network’s words, comes complete with a sleek, new studio in midtown Manhattan’s Times Square with “touch-screen technology, augmented reality, monitors throughout the room and LED walls that bring it all to life.” The studio sits on the second floor of ViacomCBS’ world headquarters where MTV’s “Trl” once drew crowds of screaming teenagers. Starting next week, hosts Burleson, Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil will have 3,000 square feet to play with. And play they will. But also do serious news — depending on the hour. Beyond the new look, “CBS Mornings” aims to “leave viewers more informed, more prepared and...

When Nate Burleson joins Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil as co-host of CBS’s morning show next month, the program will have a new look, theme and name: CBS Mornings.
The changes, to launch on Sept. 7, will connect all of the morning shows together with some of the elements of its long running CBS Sunday Morning, which has long topped its time period on weekends, including the use of the sun logo and trumpet music, Gottfried Reiche’s Abblasen.
The first hour of the weekday broadcast will still be devoted to hard news and conversation, while the second hour will feature expanded feature reporting, a central part of the Sunday show, as well as live interviews, arts and culture pieces from Anthony Mason, who recently was co-host, and Vlad Duthiers with the What to Watch segment.

There will be a surprising new face waiting to greet viewers at “CBS This Morning.”
Nate Burleson, the former NFL wide receiver and current CBS Sports football analyst, is joining the program, according to three people familiar with the matter. These people said Burleson is seen as a potential successor to some of the current anchors at the show, and the move will break up the current group of co-anchors: Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil. Mason, a veteran CBS News correspondent who has filled many roles, including as interim anchor of “CBS Evening News,” is expected to depart and take on a new role as a cultural correspondent. King, who has been with “CBS This Morning” since 2012 and has stood at the center of the show since it was revamped following the departure of Charlie Rose, has a contract that ends next year.
CBS News declined to make executives available for comment.

MTV turns 40 on Sunday, and it hardly looks its age. Well, that’s because it hardly looks like, well, anything anymore. At least that’s the depressing state of the linear MTV channel, which in recent years has become 95% reruns of “Ridiculousness,” along with a handful of runs of 20-year-old movies (“Joe Dirt”) and limited first-run airings of legacy shows like “Teen Mom” and “Catfish: The TV Series.”
It’s been a cliché for years to complain about what happened to the music on MTV. But the music question has been moot since the mid-2000s, when videos moved to YouTube and Vevo. The larger issue is, what happened to the programming, period, on MTV? It’s become a zombie channel, and for those of us still rooting for the brand, it’s a sad sight to see.

Peacock has had a rough time with their original content. Outside of their nostalgic reboot of “Saved By the Bell,” the rest of Peacock’s original slate has failed to entice audiences — but that should change with the premiere of “Girls5Eva.” Though peddling in a similar sense of nostalgia — our collective love of girl groups and ’90s/early ’00s music — what creator Meredith Scardino does is tell a hilarious, boppy story of growing up but still desiring the comfort of the past.

Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck have reportedly split after nearly one year together, People confirms. "Ben is no longer dating Ana," a source told the publication. "She broke it off. Their relationship was complicated. Ana doesn't want to be Los Angeles-based and Ben obviously has to, since his kids live in Los Angeles."
"This is something that was mutual and something that is completely amicable."
Ben and Ana were first linked in the spring of 2020, around the same time that Hilarie Burton released her memoir, in which she opened up about Ben groping her during an episode of MTV's Trl. Ben previously made a public apology to Hilarie in a tweet, writing, "I acted inappropriately toward Ms. Burton and I sincerely apologize."
After their initial meeting while filming the upcoming thriller Deep Water in New Orleans, Ana and Ben took a trip to Cuba and Costa Rica together.

“CBS This Morning” could get a new sunrise perch.
CBS is contemplating a move that could harness a cavernous studio facility in the New York headquarters of its corporate parent, ViacomCBS, for use by CBS News — in particular its A.M. program.
The studio offers panoramic views of Times Square, was once used as a base for the legendary MTV program “Trl,” and can be seen from the windows of the New York building that houses ABC morning rival “Good Morning America.” After using the space for CBS News’ coverage of the 2020 presidential election, executives are mulling the prospect of letting the news division do more there, according to three people familiar with the discussions.
The idea has not moved beyond early discussions, one of these people says, and no changes are imminent. The concept would present some logistical challenges and may not come to fruition, this person cautions. CBS...

MTV’s Total Request Live, better known as Trl and originally hosted by Carson Daly, was one of the cable network’s biggest shows during its run between 1998 and 2008.
The show aired the most requested music videos of the day as voted for by viewers.
However, by 2008, the internet, and particularly YouTube had become the preeminent destination for music lovers to find their favorite videos. Twelve years on, YouTube’s Released, which launched last week, is taking up that mantle for a new generation of fans.
