The film was the idea of Count Giovanni Montalbano in 1920 to mark the 600th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death in September 1921. Financial difficulties delayed release until the following year.
The producers tried to get Gabriellino D'Annunzio to direct. He was the son of the influential poet and politician Gabriele D'Annunzio and it was hoped his involvement would bring prestige to the project.
A print survives in the archive of the Cineteca di Bologna, and another at the Filmoteca Espanola.
