Blinded by Love

Leena is better than her movie

I admire porn star Leena, a big-name of the VHS era, not as well-remembered today after quitting to go mainstream. She won industry acting awards for this minor feature, a rather underachieving romantic crime movie by pornographer Michael Craig.

Leena is fine as a blind girl who falls in love with an injured bank robber on the run (reliable Mike Horner). The format dates back to Bogey movies like High Sierra, and Silent movies before that, and the blind gimmick is just that, a gimmick that Craig abuses at the climax with a cheapjack segue to "Wait Until Dark" action.

I enjoyed the really corny romantic Hollywood ending, but Craig poorly integrates the all-important XXX scenes into the story and his use of sound-only key scenes could have been integrated with our heroine's blind condition, but instead just comes off as an ultra-cheap gimmick, reminding me of Grade-Z movies where a car crash is presented off-screen accompanied by an AM deejay's familiar crash sound recording.

Ultimately an example of how Adult Cinema has so often been put on a false pedestal (playing a blind girl = instant award) and not taken seriously at all (sex scenes, random and extraneous, conquer everything else).
