6/10

Unashamedly sentimental, but thoroughly enjoyable

This is a typical British film. Full of pathos, self-deprecating humour and a very strong supporting cast. It's unashamedly sentimental, but thoroughly enjoyable, and anyone going to see it cannot fail to like it.

A sharp script by Jack Rosenthal and nicely directed, although the denoument of the film is never in doubt. Sadie Frost looks gorgeous as ever, and Bob Hoskins does his usual turn as a lovable rogue

Well shiver me timbers and throw me scuppers overboard

An obsessive sea captain sets sail for the arctic with a most unlikely crew of landlubbing misfits. They had many adventures, mishaps, and verbal sparring matches along the way, but the most troubling thing of all was the Brit government was after them. They were chased much of the way by Her Majesty's air force, coast guard, navy, and a pompous bureaucrat. All because the captain's boat didn't square away with seagoing rules and regs. Wonder what this chase cost the government? Good picture.

nice fairytale

No skipper operating a vessel that far north without survival suits for the crew should be keel hauled ... while i thoroughly enjoyed this film, it was a far cry from reality ...

Surprisingly good

Saw the video the other night, and was ready to shoot it down in flames - the scenario seemed so pathetic.

Surprise! -- it was actually pretty good! This was mostly due to the skills of Bob Hoskins, who is such a versatile actor, he is always believable.

Somewhat contrived, but if you can side-step this, then this is a very good, "just before bedtime" film. Worth watching.

Heartwarming film!

Wonderful characters! And it's based on a true story. Most of what happened in this movie actually did happen! This is a really enjoyable film.
