Robot Wars (1998)

Trivia

Robot Wars

Edit
Although it is no longer televised, it is a live show you can go and watch and features many robots from the series such as Thor and Iron Awe.
The idea for the show was inspired by a US-based robot combat competition which ran from 1994 - 1997.
As a young man, celebrated British cartoonist Andy Fanton (The Beano, The Dandy, Private Eye, Viz) appeared on series 2 of Robot Wars (1999), reaching the semi-final with his creation 'Robot Redford'. Fanton's 'Ace Ventura' style looks and heavy reliance on terrible robot puns made him a firm favourite with audiences and judges alike.
The voiceover at the start of each show and the top and tail of each round ("Roboteers, stand by!" and "3, 2, 1, ACTIVATE!" for example) are all provided by director Stuart McDonald.
Craig Charles's Red Dwarf (1988) co-star Robert Llewellyn whom played the robot Kryten in that series hosted Junkyard Wars (1998) at the same time. In that show, contestants constructed machines out of scrap metal and spare parts in a junkyard. In this show, contestant's remote controlled home made robots fight each other to the death in the arena.
