Milgaard Forever
I was personal friends with David Milgaard from 2018 until his death. In that time I worked with him to advocate for changes to the justice systems. We ran a youtube channel called Project Milgaard if you want to check it out.
This Made-For-TV movie aired on CTV and went on to win several Gemini Awards that year. Ian Tracey does an excellent job portraying David for dramatic purposes. Milgaard was a complicated man and Ian Tracey was able to embody his spirit. It makes me sad that David is gone and that he passed away.
This film manages to tell a 23 year long story in 90 minutes. The story is told with compassion and honor for David. There is a chance that a more gritty version of this story could be told. Either way, Milgaard himself didn't have much interest in reliving his past. He just wanted to live as much as possible. I miss him every day.
This film is terrific and it has excellent production values. There are some inaccuracies, but we have to accept this as a dramatic interpretation. A way for the viewer to experience the pain, the anguish, and the frustration that David and his friends felt as the Saskatoon Police pressed them until they gave a false confession.
It is a story that happens all to frequently. There are many stories of wrongful conviction and false imprisonment. We can only hope that conditions can improve for all prisoners so that the wrongfully convicted do not suffer.

terrible miscarriage of justice
Its interesting that this television film came out at the same time the big budget, big screen version of the Hurricane did. It re-created interest in the Hurricane Carter case and the injustice he suffered, but Milgaards is not as well known and that is indeed a shame because the injustice inflicted on him is in many ways worse then the one Carter suffered. Milgaard and his family were finally awarded $20,000,000 in compensation but of course nothing can bring back what was taken from this poor man. Imprisoned between 1969 and 1992. He was only 17 years old when his hell began and 40 when it ended. The best years of his life gone stolen by a hellish nightmare. If we had only had forensic DNA analysis back then Milgaard's ordeal need never have occured.
Heartbreak Hardship Hard Times
When I first seen this Movie all I kept thinking was the Title: Hard Times...being a perfect description towards what David went through! I know he lost many years & couldn't get back! I hope his Legacy is Carried out now he's Passed. & how No 1 should go through what he Experienced! I can't find this Movie anywhere & I hope it can be aired once again! What he went through should be a Reminder of Strength & Courage & the will of facing our Challenges! Now his tough Journey is through he's @ Peace! I hope his Life Experience Encounter can educate us... how to Stand Strong with what we may face.
