The movie was loosely based on the earlier Will Hay starring film Ask a Policeman (1939) which this remake's director Val Guest co-wrote.
Greg Smith who produced the film for the Elstree Production Company along with the Manchester based Cinema chain Apollo Leisure and M.A.M Films co-producing were originally going to do the film for ITC Entertainment as a Theatrical feature film vehicle for Cannon and Ball, using virtually the same cast with new additions and crew including Val Guest as director from Shillingbury Blowers and Shillingbury Tales. But financial problems, management and ownership changes at ITC Entertainment's then parent company ACC coupled with sister company ATV being rebooted into Central Independent Television on the orders of the IBA, caused Greg Smith to take the film to Rank .
