FAQ

The PJs

FAQ

The setting is deliberately vague and never clearly stated. The show's creators intentionally left the setting ambiguous, to give the vibe that it could take place in almost any city. The closest thing to a confirmation as to the setting is in Season 2 Episode 5, "Smokey the Squatter", where Thurgood says the storm is "supposed to be slapping its way to Chicago where it will hang out for a while, then turn around and come back here". This dialogue seems to imply that the setting is not Chicago, Illinois. If that was the case, the storm wouldn't have to turn around, because "here" would just be Chicago. Furthermore, the skyline of the city also does not appear to be Chicago, as it is missing the city's most notable building (the Sears Tower/Willis Tower). If the setting is not Chicago, it must be another large midwestern city in the vicinity. The DVD releases of the show mention that it is set in "a Detroit housing project". This makes sense, because Detroit, Michigan is one state over from Chicago, and the fictitious Hilton-Jacobs housing projects seen in the show was inspired by the real-life Brewster-Douglass housing projects in Detroit.
