The film was begun in 1919 and finished in 1920. For some unknown reason it was never released, and was thought to have been lost. However, in 2005 an original silver nitrate print turned up, and it was purchased by the Oklahoma Historical Society, which embarked on a painstaking restoration project. The film was finally restored and premiered in Oklahoma in 2012.
The cast was composed entirely of Comanche and Kiowa Indians. Among them were White Parker and Wanada Parker, the son and daughter of legendary Comanche war chief Quanah Parker.
According to the Motion Picture News, the movie actually premiered at the College Theatre in downtown Los Angeles in October 1920.
Another film, Before the White Man Came (1920), was also released in 1920 and featured an all-Native cast of Crow and Cheyenne Indians. According to the AFI Catalog, that movie is extant and a print, retitled Red Men of the Plains, is located at the Národní filmový archiv in Prague.
