The working title for this series was originally "MGM: When the Lion Roared". The company operating as MGM as of 1992--which continues to exist--is not the legal successor to the "classic" MGM, which ceased to exist after Ted Turner bought and subsequently dismantled the studio in 1986, despite sharing similar assets such as the Leo the Lion logo. However, the new MGM thought the title was detrimental to its company and demanded the slight title change.
It featured as a supplemental on the DVD disc of the three-disc Blu-ray of the 70th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz (1939).
The three-part documentary originally contained a lot of footage of Fred Astaire when it was broadcast on PBS and Turner Classic Movies. The newly released DVD has re-edited the segments in Part 3 and deleted almost all of the Astaire footage, including clips of him dancing with Gene Kelly and Lucille Bremer--both from Ziegfeld Follies (1945) and solo in Royal Wedding (1951), as Debbie Reynolds shares a story about meeting him and being invited to watch him rehearse.
The on-screen subtitles (and running times taken from the TCM print) for the three individual parts are: "Part One: The Lion's Roar (1992)" (02:02:06), "Part Two: The Lion Reigns Supreme (1992)" (02:01:00), and "Part Three: The Lion in Winter (1992)" (02:02:24).
