In preparation for her role as the mermaid Fin, Lindsay Sloane took a scuba diving course in Byron Bay so she was confident under water. She also played Valerie Birkhead on Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996) from 1997-1999.
There was a lot of questions when the TV-Movie premiered about the presence of Lindsay Sloane playing a new role after playing 'Valerie' on the TV-Show for years. In a recent interview (february 2015), Sloane said that Melissa Joan Hart wanted her to be in the movie and she wasn't going to refused the chance to go for three months to Australia, so the writers of the project had to come up with a way of getting the actress into it.

Scott Michaelson, who plays a merman in this film, was in Flipper (1995), in one episode of which he met a mermaid.
